About the Scholarship

Herman "Tex" Moten was passionate about life. He was particularly passionate about helping young black males in America as he recognized them to be of greatest risk in today’s society and for society’s need to have them make the maximum contribution to their fellow man.

As a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he was a champion of the young college man. He was also a passionate alumnus of Huston-Tillotson University and gave his enthusiastic support for more than 60 years.

"Tex" was also committed to the ideals that a man should be a man of his word and to always act with honesty and integrity; to always do his very best in every area in which he was involved.

He felt that every individual had a responsibility to be self sufficient and make a contribution to the community and not the other way around.

His conservative views and recognition of the Republican Party for its role in fighting to have black Americans recognized as full human beings, led him to be a lifelong member of the Republican Party.

"Tex" had a lasting impact upon his community and his country. He was a friend to all regardless of race, color, or creed. Therefore, this scholarship is to be a memorial to this great champion who stood straight and tall among men.
